Our Radiologist

Dr Zane Sherif

Mermaid Beach Radiology was founded in 2021 with the mission to provide personalised imaging for every client. The “cookie cutter” approach to imaging that exists at present makes little change between clients with different physiology and body types; and far too often the results are too ordinary. The experience of radiology high radiation dose, high noise and often not able to answer the clinical question.

Ben Kennedy

MRI & Clinical Research Director

Ben Kennedy is currently the MRI Clinical and Research Director at Mermaid Beach Radiology. He has a master's degree in MRI from the University of Queensland and his specialties are sequence development and translation of research applications into clinical mainstream imaging. Ben has been an invited speaker at ISMRM, SMRT and ESMRB covering such topics as pulse sequence optimization, MRI physics and specialized clinical applications.  Along with his current responsibilities at Mermaid Beach Radiology, Ben is also an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Menzies School of Health Research.

Alex Ryvachuk

Chief Radiographer & SPECTRAL Scientist

Alex holds Bachelors Degrees in Biomedical Science and Radiography from Griffith and QUT, retrospectively. He has worked both publicly and privately spanning 16 years in Medical Imaging.He is both MRI and CT trained and experienced in all things SPECTRAL. He comes from a background of training and educating radiographers in advanced imaging techniques and is always happy to take the time to explain things to those not experienced in the medical field.

Alex is a caring and jovial person who enjoys being a dad, a friend and a team member. He loves travelling the world and waking up early to see his football team lose.

Bryce Allen

Head Sonographer

Bryce is head sonographer of Mermaid Beach Radiology. He enjoys sucking at golf, performing dodgy renovations at home, and having a hack on his twinnie surfboard. Originating from Coffs Harbour, he, his wife and fur child have lived on the GC now for 10 years. He has worked with specialists in pain management, regenerative procedures, and early detection cancer biopsies, but his passion is for musculoskeletal ultrasound, in particular neurovascular pathology and sports injuries. MRI has always been gold standard for MSK, and it is his hope to advance ultrasound to match it.

Dr Zane Sherif

Dr Zane Sherif and his wife Dr Kirralee Sherif (PhD) founded this boutique clinic to be small and fabulous, yet offering the most personalised service on the best imaging equipment science has to offer. Our fleet includes Australia’s only Spectral CT scanner in private practice and the extraordinary research grade Philips Elition X 3T MRI scanner.

Dr Sherif finished his undergraduate medical degree from University College, Cork in Ireland before finishing his Masters degree from University College, Dublin. Following that Dr Sherif rotated through basic surgical training, emergency medicine and orthopaedics before commencing radiology training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and finishing a Neuro Fellowship in GCUH in 2013.

Other areas of interest include respiratory imaging and interventional procedures particularly pain management. Dr Sherif is a keen photographer and is obsessed with image quality both in his hobby and professional life. When Dr Sherif is not working, with the little spare time he has, he is consumed by his adorable kids who keep him well anchored and keep his “Dad Jokes” skill level in top notch.

And if there is any time left over after that, you may find him on a boat floating around the Gold Coast waterways at low speed inhaling in the beauty of the Gold Coast city he calls home.

What is a Radiologist?

A radiologist is a specialist medical doctor who has had postgraduate training in performing and interpreting diagnostic imaging tests, and carrying out interventional procedures or treatments, using X-ray, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging equipment.

Radiologists assist other doctors and specialists in treating their patients. They do this by making a diagnosis, and by providing treatment using medical imaging.

Radiologists have the medical knowledge to understand and explain a patient’s medical problem or symptom through images of the inside of the body.

 

What is a Sonographer?

A sonographer performs specialised diagnostic examinations using high frequency ultrasound (sonography). People may require ultrasound scans for a range of conditions from pregnancy to more complex health conditions as prescribed by their health practitioner.

The sonographer works with a radiologist who has responsibility for supervising the examination, reading and interpreting the results and providing the final report to the referring practitioner.

 

What is a Radiographer?

Radiographers are allied health professionals who take x-rays and other medical images to assist doctors in diagnosing diseases and injuries. They are also known as medical imaging technologists. A radiographer does your scan and works closely with the Radiologist who has responsibility for the report ensuring you achieve the right diagnosis.
